Indian Gaming

When Steve Lewis became United States Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma, the state was filled with what were called “gray area” gaming devices that were of questionable legality. These gaming devices were almost totally unregulated by state, tribal or federal government, a situation he found to be untenable. Turning a blind eye to such situations leads to disrespect for the law and corruption of public officials, and it left the tribes open to unscrupulous gaming practices . Steve instituted enforcement actions and litigation that eventually brought clarity to the federal law and has resulted in state-tribal compacts and flourishing tribal governments in Oklahoma. Since then, in private practice, he has written gaming opinions and advised clients regarding gaming law.
